The Center for Digital Education, in conjunction with the American Association of Community Colleges, conducts the Digital Community Colleges Survey. The annual survey identifies and spotlights colleges that provide a high level of service to their students and faculty through information technology. Schools were placed in three categories based on size of enrollment. Several Datatel clients were identified as one of the 31 outstanding examples of technology delivery in higher education. The 3D environment offers students the opportunity to participate in an online learning community that promotes the immersion of the learner in an effort to create an even fuller online learning experience. The Digital Media certificate will be followed by an associate degree in Digital Media starting spring 2009. Howard Community College, a Datatel client for more than 10 years, was presented the U.S. Senate Productivity Award last month as part of the University of Maryland Performance Excellence Awards Program.
U.S. Senator Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) and University of Maryland President C.D. “Dan” Mote, Jr., bestowed the honor at a ceremony held at the University of Maryland. Accepting the award for Howard Community College was its President, Kathleen Hetherington, and Board of Trustees Chair, Dr. Patrick Huddie.
The U.S. Senate Productivity Award honors role model organizations for successfully implementing systematic processes for continuous improvement and achieving outstanding results. Award recipients are evaluated rigorously by an independent board of examiners using the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence, which measures an organization in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results.
U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD) commented, “Howard Community College is an incredible institution--but an institution is only bricks and building. What makes it great is determined students, powerhouse faculty and consistent leadership. Community colleges are the gateway to the future. Howard Community College is an example of everything we want for our higher education facilities in Maryland.”
