Culture

Culture

Imagine working for a company that views its employees as its primary asset. Datatel strives to go the extra mile for its employees by providing a friendly and rewarding work environment where co-workers feel like family. Our culture is unique in its approach to hiring and maintaining top-notch employees.

Our Culture

Ask anyone who has dealt with our company and see if they mention a difference between Datatel and other companies in the industry – either in the way they were treated, the people they dealt with, or the feeling they had walking away. We are very proud of the positive comments we receive every day about how special people feel about Datatel.

We’re also proud of the individuals we hire. We select the very best, and encourage them to become even better!  Our employees clearly make the difference at Datatel.  They are the ones who took the initiative to develop and document the Datatel Basics (our internal guidelines about working ethically and treating clients, prospects and colleagues fairly and with respect). Ask an employee to see his or her Basics Card – everyone always keeps one close by.

What Makes Datatel Different?

Higher Education is Our Business. The reason we have an affinity to the Higher Education industry is because it is our lifeblood. Higher education is the only business in which Datatel is involved. Besides, most of our employees have worked in the higher education community or come to Datatel with advanced degrees. We don’t look at higher education as a market to conquer, it’s our partner in business.

Likewise, employees are viewed and treated as partners in business. That may explain our very strong employee retention record. Chances are the employees you work with at Datatel today will also be working with you five or ten years from now.

Giving Back to the Community

An integral part of our culture is giving back to the community. In 1990, our Board of Directors established the Datatel Scholars Foundation to award scholarships to students at client schools. Over the years, Datatel is proud to have given more than $3.8 million to help students pursue their dreams of higher education.

We also contribute actively to charities supported by our employees or those serving our local communities. Each year a significant number of our employees, families and friends participate in Community Service Day, a special day to celebrate our corporate anniversary where we "give back". Our activities have included rebuilding trails at a local park, helping with track and field events for Special Olympics, and making sick children’s wishes come true through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  To learn more about Datatel's philanthropic ventures, please visit the Community Service area.

Our Nameplate Program

Outside of each office or cubicle, you’ll see employee nameplates that are put in place before each employee’s first day. From the president to the front-line staff, the nameplates are covered with ribbons of honor. These ribbons reward outstanding achievement, length of service in the company and involvement in community service activities.

Orientation

Every few months, Datatel holds a full-day, off-site meeting during which the officers of the company share the history, culture and corporate business strategies with all new employees. The day is also spent learning about Datatel’s Continuous Quality Improvement program. This portion of the training session is led by volunteer members of our Quality Education and Training Committee.  To learn more about our quality initiatives, join us on the continuous improvement journey.

Then, there’s the series of five two-hour Datatel Basics classes to help new employees acclimate themselves to our culture. The classes include: Teamwork, Culture, Time Management, Problem Solving, and Communication. Current employees also attend these classes so that new folks get to meet people across the entire organization.

For at least the first four weeks of each new employee’s tenure, we provide a "buddy" who is the new employee’s point of contact to help with the orientation to our culture and the facilities. These helpful coworkers answer questions and make themselves available to help smooth the transition process.

Is the Datatel culture really different? Don’t just take our word for it. Ask around.
